Even with the benefit of hindsight, I’m not sure why I decided to get the PS5 HD Camera. I don’t even have the device plugged in anymore, which is a sign of how much I’ve been enjoying my fictitious new acquisition.
I might have purchased it only out of curiosity, or perhaps it was because the Shellder-like item was on sale at the time. However, the PS5 HD Camera’s capabilities are appallingly constrained aside from the occasional use for Twitch streaming. When the PS4 Camera originally came out, I recall wondering why anyone would buy it, but it is now a much more competent gadget than Sony’s most recent version of its proprietary webcam. The PS4 Camera contains a microphone and facial recognition technology so you can use your console hands-free. It also has a microphone so you can shout orders into the device. Eventually, the PS4 Camera integrated with PSVR to provide head and motion tracking.
Details of the HD camera on the PS5
The PS5 HD Camera specs aren’t as extensive as those of a laptop or the PS5 console itself. The 1080p recording resolution of the camera is its most remarkable feature. This is a fantastic improvement over the PS4 camera’s maximum 800p resolution. Even though 4K is increasingly the standard in our world, a 1080p resolution is still nothing to be ashamed of.
The fact that this HD camera has two 1080p wide-angle lenses lets it catch even more of your surroundings in full HD, which is an important point to make. Once the camera is connected and plugged in, you can change the zoom settings within the console, but doing so is not required before filming.

Steer clear
Unfortunately, Sony won’t allow you to utilize any other webcams with the PS5. This contradicts Microsoft’s strategy. Almost any third-party webcam can be plugged into an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S for streaming, and many of them outperform the PlayStation 5 HD Camera while also operating on a PC.
That might force some people to buy the PS5 HD Camera, but everyone else should follow my warning and stay away. You don’t actually need it.
One PS5 attachment, the DualSense Charging Station, is something I wholeheartedly advise purchasing right now. After purchasing the Charging Station, I’ve noticed that it has helped ease any aggravation I may have when the much too frequent “Wireless Controller battery is low” alert comes.

You can stream live video to Twitch, YouTube, or another streaming service using the features of both the PS5 console and PS5 camera. This makes it quite simple to accomplish all you need to set up your stream from the comfort of your sofa if you mostly stream PlayStation games.
Then, there are tools for removing backgrounds that are included. Choosing a location for your broadcast is one of the most difficult aspects of initial stream setup. When you have other obligations besides streaming, it can be challenging to find a place in the house that isn’t too cluttered or monotonous.
You may either blur out or fully eliminate your background with the background removal features on the PS5 camera so that viewers can only see your face. How much of your environment is cut out is entirely up to you. Conclusion
Only if you currently stream or want to stream in the future directly from your console is it worthwhile to purchase the HD camera for the PS5. You really don’t need the PS5’s camera if you’re not a streamer and don’t plan to start one. at this time, at least.
The camera on the PS4 offered unique capabilities like facial recognition to unlock the device and the ability to use it in some PSVR games. In the future, the PS5 camera might have these features (and possibly more! ), but as of May 2022, they aren’t available, therefore it doesn’t actually help users besides streamers.
